Tree work in Bateau Bay

Tall hardwoods on the national park boundary

NPWS lists Bateau Bay Beach picnic area, behind the north end of the beach, within Wyrrabalong National Park, and large trees keep it shaded. Trees within Wyrrabalong National Park are managed by the parks service, not by council or the neighbours. A quote for a block on that boundary covers only the trees on the private side, and plans around the spread of the park's big trees.

NPWS says walkers setting out from the picnic area wander along the clifftops, past blackbutts and spotted gums. Both are tall, heavy hardwoods. Where one stands close to a house, taking it down usually means climbing it and lowering it in sections on ropes, with a large chipper and a stump grinder allowed for in the quote.

Bateau Bay questions

Fire records along the park edge

Has the bush near Crackneck burnt before?

More than once. NPWS fire history lists twelve fire records named for Crackneck, among them a wildfire named Crackneck Lookout that covered about 26 hectares in October 1991. For homes along that edge, the usual work is taking dead wood out of the trees nearest the house.

Do fires still start in the park?

They do. NPWS fire history lists fourteen records with Bateau Bay in the name, among them wildfires on the Bateau Bay Point walking track in September 2021 and December 2023. Leaf litter and fallen bark under the trees, and in the gutters, are worth clearing before each fire season.

Can the RFS 10/50 rule be used near the house?

Only where the RFS online tool shows the block in a 10/50 entitlement area, checked on the day of clearing. Trees within 10 metres of a home can then be cleared, but the stumps stay, because the code does not allow vegetation to be removed below the soil surface.
