Tree work in Ettalong Beach

Memorial pines, a significant blackbutt and kerb works

Gosford City Council's significant tree register listed slender cypress pines along Memorial Avenue, running from The Esplanade, and recorded them as planted under Remembrance Day. They are council road reserve trees, so a private job on that street plans its truck position, drop zone and root protection around the avenue rather than through it.

The same register named a blackbutt in the road reserve beside Pacific Street as one of the most significant blackbutts within the Gosford City area, and noted some crown maintenance. It is the council's tree, so a worry about its limbs over a house goes to the council rather than to a tree contractor.

The register also noted a threat from future kerb and gutter works to a willow myrtle at the southern end of Whiting Road. New kerbing cuts through the roots of street trees in sandy road reserves like these, which can leave a tree unstable or in decline.

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

  1. 1

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

A grey haired man in his back yard on the phone, looking up at a tall gum beside the house
  2. 2

A contractor comes to see it

A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

  4. 4

    You get it in writing

Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

Ettalong Beach questions

The school's brush box, a threatened lilly pilly and old palms

Can the brush box the school pupils planted be trimmed?

Not by a private job. The register listed a brush box planted by pupils of Ettalong School as a council-owned tree of grade 1 significance. A commemorative tree like that is kept rather than replaced, so a job on a nearby block prunes only its own trees and keeps outrigger pads off its roots.

Why is a lilly pilly identified before it is cut?

Syzygium paniculatum is one of the trees the council's pre tree works checklist names as a known threatened species on the Central Coast, and the register listed a lilly pilly, Syzygium paniculatum, beside Barrenjoey Road as a council-owned tree. So a lilly pilly in a garden nearby is identified to species before anyone prunes it hard or removes it.

Are the cabbage tree palms near the park protected?

Some are on the register. It listed cabbage tree palms along Broken Bay Road, beside Lemon Grove Park, on private and council land, as a remnant of original vegetation, so palm work on those blocks starts with a check against the register and the permit rules.
