Tree work in Holgate
Dry forest, wet forest and rainforest side by side
Council's Railway to Rainforest walk leads from Gosford railway station to the rainforest at Seymour Pond, in Katandra Reserve. That rainforest is one of three distinct vegetation zones within Katandra, with dry sclerophyll west of the St John lookout and wet sclerophyll to its east. Because the bush shifts from dry eucalypt forest to tall wet forest to rainforest over a short distance, the species, the weight of the timber and the dampness of the ground on one Holgate block can differ from those on the next.
Central Coast Council says the reserve is home to powerful owls, brushtail and ringtail possums, sugar gliders, swamp wallabies and microbats. Most of those shelter in tree hollows, so a big old tree near the reserve is checked for occupants before work starts, and if something is living in it the removal is staged to give it time to move.

Stump grinding
Stumps ground out on the parts of a block a grinder can reach, with the grindings spread or carted off.

Holgate questions
Rocky ground, fire tanks and dead trees with hollows
Can a stump grinder reach the back of a bush block?
Not always. Council's notes for a bird walk in Katandra Reserve warn that the track may be steep and rocky in parts, and the bush blocks along the reserve can be just as rough. Where the grinder cannot get in, the stump is cut low and left, and the timber is lowered and brought out by hand or on a winch line.
How does bushfire shape tree work in Holgate?
It decides what comes first. In December 2017 council said the rural fire brigades at Holgate and Dooralong had better access to water for firefighting, with two 35,000 litre tanks in operation in those communities and more to follow at the northern end of Holgate. On a rural block the priorities are limbs off the roof, fuel thinned around the house and a driveway clear enough for a fire truck.
Can a dead tree near the reserve just be cut down?
Not if animals are using it. Council's dead or dying exemption does not cover a tree that is needed as habitat, hollows in the trunk or branches included, and beside a reserve with owls, gliders, possums and microbats, a dead tree with hollows may well be occupied. Taking one of those down is then no longer a simple dead-tree job, and it needs approval first.
