Tree work in Terrigal

Pines, a lagoon and thin soil over rock

The council has had all the deadwood taken out of the Norfolk pines lining Terrigal Esplanade because of the risk of falling timber over the busy summer months. Pines in back yards shed the same dead branches and heavy cones, usually with a roof or a driveway underneath them.

In the June 2016 storm, big seas and king tides meant waves washed through Terrigal Lagoon entrance, flooding and damaging lakeside properties. Trees on those low blocks can stand for days in wet, salty ground, which is hard on a root plate.

Under The Skillion the sandstone sits on a distinct band of grey shale, and much of the town is thin soil over rock. Trees root wide rather than deep on ground like that, and a stump grinder can meet stone not far down.

Terrigal questions

Heritage pines, and the lagoon

Can the heritage pines on the foreshore be trimmed?

Not as a private job. The Norfolk Island pine trees and significant trees at Terrigal on the beach foreshore are local heritage items in the council's planning scheme, so work on them is the council's business. Trees on your own block are quoted in the ordinary way.

Is soggy ground near the lagoon a risk for big trees?

It can be. The council gives Terrigal Lagoon a 1 in 100 chance flood level of 2.48m AHD, and on the low foreshore a tree can sit in saturated soil for days after a big blow. A lean that shows up after a flood is worth having looked at.

Why do so many jobs here come down in pieces?

Because the state's estuary profile says about 10% of the catchment remains forested, and the rest is houses. A big tree is nearly always hard against a roof, a fence or next door, so it is climbed and lowered rather than felled.
