Lakeside paperbarks and a beach losing its dunes
Mackenzie Reserve, bounded by Lake Munmorah, supports large stands of remnant melaleucas, which council describes as a significant local feature. Paperbarks on that shore grow in damp, soft ground, so heavy machinery is kept off their waterlogged root zones, and a paperbark from a remnant stand is checked against council's register and vegetation rules before it is cut.
On the ocean side, Coast Community News reported in March 2022 that Lakes Beach had suffered what was being seen as the worst case of coastal erosion for the top end of the coast. The sand dropped at least three metres in front of the surf club, and two large trees washed up. When the dunes retreat like that, trees behind the beachfront can be undercut and fall onto the sand, so a tree whose roots the sea has bared is assessed from the lawn, never from the slumping face.
Services in Budgewoi
Lake edges, beach dunes and wet root zones
Tree removal
Lakeside trees taken down from firm ground, without disturbing large stands of remnant melaleucas nearby.
Tree pruning
Paperbarks and other lakeside trees cut back off roofs and fences, with the cuts kept small.
Stump grinding
Stumps near the lake ground out in a dry spell, so the grinder does not sink into the root zone.

Budgewoi questions
Dune plantings and the saltmarsh at Budgewoi Point
Can the dune plants behind the beach be cut back?
Only what hangs over the yard. Wyong Shire Council reported that the Budgewoi Beach Dunecare group, at work on the dunes since 1995, had replaced bitou bush and lantana with plants including coastal wattle, banksia, lomandra, dianella, coastal tea tree and scaevola, and those plantings hold the sand. Bitou bush and lantana found in a yard come out as weeds rather than being spread through the green waste.
What is happening on the Budgewoi Point foreshore?
Saltmarsh rehabilitation. Along the water's edge there, council's works set out to reshape the foreshore to a suitable slope that would decrease the impact of wave energy. The aim is to restore coastal saltmarsh habitat, an endangered ecological community, so the DCP exemptions do not apply to it, the 10/50 code does not allow it to be cleared, and a tree job on a lakeside block keeps machinery, drop zones and mulch off it.
