Fire that has reached homes before

The Rural Fire Service warned on 18 October 2013 that an out of control fire was impacting properties in Chain Valley Bay. Spot fires broke out along Chain Valley Bay Road, and the warning said Gwandalan and Summerland Point could be next. Where fire has come that near, branches over roofs, dead timber and leaf-choked gutters are the first things dealt with.

It was not the first time. The state's fire history layer shows a 2004-05 wildfire named Chain Valley Bay that started on 6 November 2004, was out the next day and burnt about 101 hectares inside the suburb. The same records hold a run of smaller fires under that name, and taking down or cutting well back a tree that stands over a house is a common request before summer.

Chain Valley Bay questions

Burns beside the streets, and a road that floods

Is the bush near the houses burnt on purpose?

Yes. The parks service lists a prescribed burn named Mulloway Road HR in the bush beside the streets here. It ran from 2 to 4 April 2024 and covered about 19 hectares, which shows how near the managed fuel sits to the houses.

Does flooding affect tree work here?

Near the low point it does. When council raised a section of Chain Valley Bay Road over large concrete culverts, the mayor said the suburb is prone to flooding at this location. Ground beside it stays saturated after heavy rain, which loosens a tree's root plate, so a tree that starts to lean there is worth having checked.
