Tree work in Toukley

A large wetland, and a summer wildfire

Council's World Wetlands Day release of February 2017 named the 175 hectare Toukley wetland among the largest natural wetlands in the Tuggerah Lakes catchment. Homes on its edge sit on low, wet ground where trees root shallowly in soft soil and blow over more easily in a storm. Soft ground there can also limit where a truck, a chipper or a stump grinder can go.

That swamp and bush edge can carry fire. NPWS fire history records a 2000-01 wildfire named Toukley Wetland that started on 7 January 2001, ended the next day and burnt about 103 hectares. On blocks backing onto it, keeping branches off the roof, clearing leaf litter and thinning growth close to the house are the usual jobs.

Toukley questions

The 2017 storm, and the clean up after it

What needs doing after a big storm here?

In November 2017 council said the severe storm that hit Toukley and Noraville on a Monday afternoon brought down a number of trees, leaving the area looking like a mini tornado had ripped through. After a storm like that, split and fallen trees are cleared first, and damaged trees still standing near houses are checked as well.

Where does the green waste go after a storm?

After the severe storm that hit Toukley and Noraville, council encouraged residents to book a bulk kerbside collection, particularly for green waste. That collection takes branches, and stumps and logs up to 30cm in diameter, so a bigger trunk is chipped on site or carted to a council facility for a fee.
