Tree work in Gosford

Old park trees and reclaimed ground

A lot of Gosford's canopy is old and heritage listed. Burns Place, with its feature eucalypt and stands of mature trees, is a local heritage item, and most of that small park is mature tree plantings dating from the 1930s to the 1960s.

The waterfront is made ground. Leagues Club Field sits on land reclaimed in the early 1900s from Brisbane Water, and fill holds a tree's roots differently from natural soil, which matters for the big trees growing on it.

Behind the town, Rumbalara Reserve carries Narrabeen Coastal Blackbutt Forest, and fire history records a wildfire named Rumbalara Reserve in the 2000 to 2001 fire year. Blocks on the slopes below share its tall blackbutts and its fire season.

How it works

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

  1. 1

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

A grey haired man in his back yard on the phone, looking up at a tall gum beside the house
  2. 2

A contractor comes to see it

A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

A steep driveway up to a hillside house with a large Sydney red gum and sandstone boulders beside it
  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

A woman at a dining table working on a laptop, tall gum trees through the window behind her
  4. 4

    You get it in writing

Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

A tree contractor in hi-vis work clothes walking up to a front gate, where the home owner holds a single sheet of paper, a big gum across the road

Gosford questions

Heritage approvals and memorial trees

Do heritage trees here need a different approval?

Yes. The council's significant tree register does not cover trees listed as heritage items, and separate approval from council's heritage officer is required for any works on heritage listed items. That sits outside the usual tree permit.

Are the trees in Memorial Park protected?

Some of them. The NSW War Memorials Register says certain trees throughout the park are also heritage listed, and the park holds a Lone Pine memorial tree grafted from the one at the Australian War Memorial.

Which other park trees are listed?

The city centre heritage map lists the avenue and feature trees at Grahame Park as a local heritage item, along with a separate feature fig tree.

Old tree over the house?

Have it looked at before it drops a limb
