Tree work in Tuggerah
Camphor laurels with heritage standing at the old dairy
Council's heritage schedule lists the former Tuggerah Pioneer Dairy on South Tacoma Road as a local heritage item. Its listing describes what is apparently a timber building with broad verandahs and a brick chimney, and records camphor laurel trees noted for their significance.
That cuts against the usual rule. Camphor laurel is on council's Undesirable Species List, and pruning or removing a listed species is normally one of the exemptions in council's tree rules, but no exemption covers a tree that forms part of a heritage item. So any pruning or removal of the camphors in the dairy's listing starts with council's heritage approval, and on neighbouring land the drop zone is kept well clear of the old buildings.

Tuggerah questions
The reserve fence, a spring burn and a late-winter wildfire
Who looks after trees over the reserve fence?
The parks service does. Tuggerah Nature Reserve was created in February 2007 and covers about 132 hectares, and a yard that backs onto it can only have its own trees worked on. A limb reaching over from the reserve side is a matter to raise with NPWS first.
Is the bush here burnt to keep fuel down?
Yes. The parks service's fire records show a prescribed burn named South Tacoma Road HR. It ran over two days in October 2025 and covered about 24.8 hectares, which shows how much fuel the bush near Tuggerah homes carries.
Can fire come through here outside summer?
It has. NPWS fire history also includes a wildfire named Lake Road. It began in late August 2009 and burnt about 147 hectares, a reminder that fire preparation here is not only a summer job.
