Tree work in The Entrance

Listed pines and a bungalow heritage area

The council's planning scheme lists a boat shed and Norfolk Island pines on The Entrance Road as a local heritage item. Any pruning or removal of those pines goes through council's heritage process, not the usual tree exemptions.

In 2011 the old Wyong Shire Council recommended a Heritage Conservation Area at Oakland Avenue, The Entrance, to protect a number of significant single storey bungalows. It is now in the planning scheme, which requires consent, with some exceptions, to alter a tree inside a heritage conservation area. Council's tree exemptions do not apply there either, so on those blocks even a light prune starts with council's heritage officer.

How it works

From the first message to a written quote

The council question is settled before any price, and nothing is booked until you have said yes to a quote in writing.

  1. 1

Tell us what the tree is doing

Where it stands, what it is close to and what you would like done about it.

A grey haired man in his back yard on the phone, looking up at a tall gum beside the house
  2. 2

A contractor comes to see it

A tree contractor who covers your suburb looks at the tree, the access and what is underneath it.

A steep driveway up to a hillside house with a large Sydney red gum and sandstone boulders beside it
  3. 3

    The council question is answered

Height, trunk size, distance from the house and the species decide whether a permit or an exemption applies.

A woman at a dining table working on a laptop, tall gum trees through the window behind her
  4. 4

    You get it in writing

Scope, timber, stump and date on one page, and nothing is booked until you have said yes.

A tree contractor in hi-vis work clothes walking up to a front gate, where the home owner holds a single sheet of paper, a big gum across the road

The Entrance questions

Shade trees, and a tree for Anzac Day

Can the shade trees in the town centre be cut back?

Not as a private job. The tuckeroos on the corner of Victoria Avenue and The Entrance Road are council street trees that shade pedestrians, and in November 2016 council investigated when it believed some had been deliberately poisoned. Work on a property nearby keeps chemicals and machinery away from their roots.

What about the memorial tree at the primary school?

The NSW War Memorials Register records a memorial tree with a plaque on a sandstone block at The Entrance Primary School, dedicated on Anzac Day 2002. A tree like that is cared for rather than replaced, so any work near it is careful pruning, with its root zone and the plaque block protected, and only with the school's agreement.

Do the listed pines change anything next door?

They can. A quote for a neighbouring block leaves the listed pines out, and nothing is stacked on or driven over the ground under their canopy.
