Tree removal in Magenta

Tree removal and pruning in Magenta, for homes on the edge of Wyrrabalong National Park and its red gum forest.

Tree work in Magenta

Rainforest on one trail, crooked red gums on the next

NPWS says the Lillypilly loop trail, in the northern part of Wyrrabalong National Park, passes through the Central Coast's largest remaining stand of littoral rainforest, under a canopy of towering corkwoods, cabbage tree palms and tuckeroos. That kind of rainforest is an endangered ecological community under state law, which puts it outside council's exemptions. A cabbage tree palm or a tuckeroo on a block near the stand is checked against that listing before pruning or removal is quoted, and trees inside the park stay with the parks service.

The Red Gum trail nearby winds through forest with old man banksias and large Sydney red gums, their branches twisting towards the light and across the track. Those long, crooked limbs can let go without warning. Over a roof or a driveway the usual answer is selective pruning that takes weight off the end of each limb, since lopping a red gum only brings on weak regrowth.

Magenta questions

Planned burns, a roadside wildfire and the new path

Why do big trees near the park have scarred bases?

Because the forest beside Magenta is burnt on a plan. NPWS fire history shows prescribed burns named Redgums, carried out in three phases from 2012 to 2014 and almost entirely inside the suburb. A tall gum on that edge can carry a fire scar or a hollow at the base, and the base is checked for decay before a climber goes up or the tree is felled near a home.

Has a wildfire started in Magenta itself?

Yes. The parks service lists a wildfire named Wilfred Barret Dr Magenta. It began on 29 October 2014 and burnt about 2.4 hectares, all of it within the suburb. On blocks that back onto that bush, tree work often means cutting fuel and lifting the canopy clear of the house, after the bush fire prone land map and the RFS 10/50 tool have been consulted for the lot.

Who looks after the trees along the shared path?

That depends on whose land each tree stands on. Council built the Magenta Shared Pathway beside Wilfred Barrett Drive so that it does not encroach into the Wyrrabalong National Park, and planted it with natives grown from seed and cuttings collected around Magenta. Park trees are for NPWS to manage, the path plantings are the council's, and only a tree on private land is quoted as a private job.
