Hoop pines that once marked an entry
The State Heritage Inventory describes a group of four hoop pines at the entry to a property, the sort of planting once used to mark the entries and homesteads around here. The same record says they were probably planted in the mid 19th century. Hoop pines grow tall and straight with tiers of heavy branches, and trees that old can carry dead limbs and decay that are hard to judge from the ground.
Council's planning scheme lists hoop pines at Palm Grove as a local heritage item, which takes them outside the exemptions council allows for ordinary garden trees. Any pruning or removal starts with council's heritage approval, and once that is given, trees that tall are climbed or reached from an elevated platform, with each section lowered on a rope and the entry kept open.

Palm Grove questions
Named wildfires in the valley
Does the bush around the homes here burn?
It does. The parks service's fire history holds a wildfire named Ourimbah Creek Rd that burnt wholly inside Palm Grove. It covered about 45 hectares in the 2002-03 fire year, and homes beside that bush are better off with limbs off the roof, leaf litter cleared and dead trees near the house taken out.
Can the bush burn outside the summer months?
Yes. The same records hold a wildfire named Moores Point Road, most of which burnt inside Palm Grove. It ran from 3 to 11 August 2014, in late winter, so clearing around a house here suits any dry spell of the year, not only the run-up to summer.
