Tree work in Pearl Beach

A council fig, dune paperbarks and a woodland on sand

Beside the village shops, the old Gosford significant tree register listed a weeping fig planted in 1965, a council tree graded for landscape amenity. A fig that age spreads surface roots under the paving and kerbs around it. Root pruning, trenching or stump grinding on the land next to it is planned around that root zone and cleared with the council before it starts.

The same register named a council-owned stand of broad-leaved paperbarks behind the dune, with mulching required, so work beside them keeps machinery on mats and leaves the mulch in place. The state's soil map adds a swamp soil landscape named Warriewood, one unit of about 32.3 hectares covering about a quarter of the suburb. Ground like that stays wet near the surface, so trees on it root shallowly and can go over in a saturating storm, and a stump there is ground out in soft, wet sand rather than rock.

The NSW Scientific Committee lists Umina Coastal Sandplain Woodland as an endangered ecological community recorded on the coastal sands of Umina and Pearl Beach, and notes that its understorey has been removed at Pearl Beach. Bangalay and rough barked apple in that remnant can still belong to the community, so a request to prune or remove one is checked against the listing before it is quoted, and the work may be limited or refused.

Pearl Beach questions

Verge angophoras, a week cut off and an arboretum burn

Who prunes the registered angophoras on the verges?

The council does. The Gosford register listed seven rough barked apples in Pearl Beach, six of them on road reserve. These big, spreading angophoras drop limbs over roofs and roads, so pruning one that reaches over a block begins with a request to the council.

What happens when a storm brings a tree down here?

It can shut people in. After a storm in February 2020, Coast Community News reported residents trapped in their street by a fallen tree for most of a week. On slopes this steep, a fallen tree is made safe before the first cut, and the job is planned around the grade and the space for a truck and chipper.

Has the bush inside the village been burnt?

Deliberately, yes. A prescribed burn named Crommelin Arboretum is on the NPWS record, a small one of about 0.39 hectares that began on 17 September 2008. Where a block adjoins the arboretum or the national park, the usual work is keeping branches off the roof and out of the gutters, and carting the offcuts away rather than leaving them as fuel.
